"The Three levels of the Martial Arts." -Do you work all Three?
Many Martial arts practitioners train there bodies rigourously. But are they really getting all they can from there training? Many only look upon there training as a way to grow physcially stronger and become better fighters. Some look on the other levels of training such as Mental, and Spiritual as Mumbo Jumbo. But again I pose the question, are you getting all you can from the Martial Arts?
When you train you work and push yourself through difficulty, pain, and at times frustration. Because of it you grow stronger, faster, sharper, more defined, you gain endurance and grace. You become master over your body and learn to shape it to your will. Many settle for these benefits and results. But if you examine this you can realize that the body is only an example or symbol if you will of what one can accomplish.
If you applied these ATTITUDES, lessons, to other areas in your life, Mentally, Spirtually what could come of it? At work, school, at home, in your marriage, with your freinds, your parents, through whatever difficulties you might face.... Would you push yourself through pain, at times frustration, grow stronger, quicker, sharper, more defined? Would you gain endurance and Grace? Could you become master over not only your body but your very existence? Many have found this to be so. To do so is to be a Martial Artist. A Warrior.

Re: Three Levels in The Martial Arts. Are you working all Three?
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 11:42 AMHello,
I have been in the Martial Arts 41 years..Isshinryu trained by now 9th dan Ed Johnson, one of the founders who learned from T. Shimabuku...
in '76-'77 was senior private student to Grandmaster Dr. Dae Shik Kim...one of the founders of TKD and Judo in the US....form him I learned TKD as a martial art, not just a sport...(Dr. Kim was in the 1st TKD class in Korea in 1945 although it wasn't called TKD yet)
active with Shamnic teachings....meditation....falun dafa...
There are 3 levels in the Martial Arts...
1. Physical.....and everything that can be done at that level...the health benifits are in the physical level....important not to overcompete and turn into a mass of injuries...that will limit your ability to practice or in some cases (knees/hips) to even walk far enoughto get aerobic benifits over age 40 or so....improtant to train katas, bags etc. in later years...not just "retrire" to teach , stand around and count 1-10 with overweight diabetic self.....and expire in 50's or early 60's.
A master told me in my early teens....the old bare knucke days of the late 60's....."Compete til you can face real fear....til you are winning more than you are losing.....and then....get out......competition has served its purpose....if you stay in too long your number will come up and serious permanent injuries will happen"
I know people from that era with epilepsy....one with ruined knees, a bad shoulder, bad neck, bad elbow, TMJ in jaw from contact, multiple concussions....bad neck, bad lumbar...(THIS IS IN ONE PERSON) who is 54 and can barely walk.....aerobic condition is miserable and health (circulatory, B.P. ) etc. problems are accelerating....He cashed in ever being a master to be a champion....do remember masters were champions in their 20's...they continued to practice...Try not to overcompete.....
2. Chi....soft fist, iron palm etc.. a real art
3. Beyond...what is called in Native American...as "spinning a tyrant".... you feel, know...when somthing is coming close...you get the creepy feeling "something ain't right"..always stop the mind chatter and listen , get in the moment....you will know the direction "it" is coming from....often you can just avoid.... (a Dr. Kim teaching," A meaningless encounter with a violent person is like walking along and you come to a pile of dog poop on the sidewalk.....do you compulsively go and stick your nose in it, or do you simply walk around it....it is unplesant if you get it on you....."
If in an actual encounter with a violent evil person.....if you are of advanced skill in the 1st two levels...you turn and look at the person approaching....look at their throat peripherally to see whole being....feet, shoulders, etc.....
and....make your peace with god...don't need to say a word...better usually not to speak to keep focus in tanden...center chakra...these are your last 5 seconds on this earth.....BUT.....they are going with me......a great peace falls over you....the "Great Spirit" is with you..if you are a good person...in the light....if not all bets are off.
If you are sincere in your heart and skill the other person will stop as if they have hit a brick wall...turn around and walk off and not look back...
This is both "Spinning a Tyrant" and "Using Death as an Ally"
Its real....victory without drawing the sword....Oh, I have done this about a dozen times, but have not attracted any tyrants of this sort in 13 years or so.....
This is also a dynamic of good/evil....evil cannot stand up to the light.....
Namaste,
T.
