I am curious to know how much people are paying for karate classes. I am currently practicing isshinryu karate and am paying $85 per month. I am able to take as many classes per week as I want, although, with my schedule can only go once per week. I am feeling like this is a little pricey. I really respect the art although am not particularly sure I can afford this particular Dojo. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: The cost of karate
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 8:42 PMI'm in Maine too. Where are you at?
I'm southern Maine.
Thats a good price for being able to go as much as you want.
Since you can't go but only once a week
ask for a discount.
The dojo I go to did that for me when I began cause I could only come once a week.
Just ask. -

Thu, April 6, 2006 - 8:52 PMHi Erika. A friend actually suggested I ask for a discount but I wasn't so sure about it. I am sure he would rather I continue with him than go elsewhere. Plus, I really like his style of teaching. His classes are small and he is very thorough. I practice at Three Treasures Dojo in Portland. I see you are a belly dancer as well. I have been taking classes with Emma Holder, she is part of Naya's Trance belly dance troupe. Do you take lessons as well? -

Re: The cost of karate
Mon, May 29, 2006 - 2:45 PMI was wondering if your School does Katas as a group? I joined 4 months ago, I am now an orange belt and we do not do Katas as a class, nor do I know how to do take downs??My son and husband were into the Martial Arts for years, and thier classes always did Katas as a class, and they learned take downs when they were white belts. I recieved my orange belt without knowing the first kata? It was shown to me about 3 times, so I bought tapes to teach myself. Thnks! julie -

Re: The cost of karate
Fri, April 7, 2006 - 3:26 AMMy teacher do not charge, however he is out of town and I must make a substantial trip when I go see him (about 600 miles). My students pay $20/ month, but I do not run a commercial venue nor do I use the money to live on. THe money goes only toward funding my own education and in sponsoring occasional seminars.
Hope this helps.

Re: The cost of karate
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 1:59 PMHello,
I started in '68 with Ed Johnson ,,, Isshinryu...he was one of the original crew in Okinawa USMC 1959....one of only 3 or 4 still left.....he is still alive and well in Dallas, TX ...I think.....circa '68 $15.00 a month for the first three months....then it went DOWN to $10.00 per month....2 hour workouts....could go M,T,W,TH and SAT...could get 40 hours of class at that rate...but better to take day off between classes...I went M,W, SAT for 3 1/4 years.....the logic was during the first three months you would have aches and stretch pains and the extra $5.00 would give you that extra incentive to stick it out.....those were the days.no rules kumite....except no fingers to eyes....no side kicks to front or side of knee....I made it through somehow without any injuries that stuck......I got shodan Isshinryu '71.....still practice....the dojo then was 3/4 mile from my home in River Oaks, Tx...a suburb of F.W.

Re: The cost of karate
Thu, December 20, 2007 - 8:31 PMOld thread, but dayam....you guys are getting a deal.
I'm in the SF Bay Area and train with Grand Master Robert Ito in Kenpo and Kosho Ryu. I go unlimited for $345/quarter including a family discount (my son and GF also train). I do take advantage of the unlimited portion and train six days a week. Speaking of which, off to kickboxing right now.
